Church Records
The Council of Trent decreed in 1563 the mandatory introduction of marriage and baptism registers. The Rituale Romanum required in 1614 the additional maintenance of confirmation and death registers. In Protestant regions, the introduction of church records followed the church ordinances during the Reformation.
Numerous church records have been lost—through fire disasters and the turmoil of war. Many parishes did not separate from their former mother church until the 17th or 18th century; therefore, parish register entries must be sought in the registers of the mother church.
